Ilker Aycı Receives 2021 APEX CEO Lifetime Achievement Award

Group CEO & Chairman at Turkish Airlines İlker Aycı is the first European recipient of the APEX CEO Lifetime Achievement Award. During an introductory speech, APEX/IFSA CEO Dr. Joe Leader recounted numerous examples of Aycı facing seemingly impossible challenges head-on. Aycı said, “If you want to be a leader, whenever you’re presented with a challenge you have to have only one response, “challenge accepted.”” He thanked his fellow airline leaders for the way they were tackling COVID-19, stating, “the industry is strong enough to fight against every crisis we face.”

SpiceJet Receives 2021 APEX/IFSA Newcomer of the Year Award

Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet has been awarded the 2021 APEX/IFSA Award in the Newcomer of the Year category for its SG Docs mobile app, which was created during the past 12 months to digitize flight attendants’ operational processes. It includes a library of digital documents regarding cabin announcements and current cabin defects as well as various operational forms. During the pandemic, SpiceJet created an e-form within the app that allows crew to share vaccination appointment dates and upload vaccination certificates, which assists the airline in pre-assigning cabin crews’ flight duties.

Falcon 300 Terminal Receives FAA STC for Boeing 737 Installations

Inmarsat Aviation has received a supplemental type certificate (STC) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the installation of its Falcon 300 terminal, which was developed together with GDC Advanced Technology, onboard Boeing 737 aircraft. The STC for the lightweight, low-drag solution was obtained under GDC’s Organization Designation Authorization program at its facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The companies are now working on the completion of STCs for additional aircraft types in addition to linefit approval for both Boeing and Airbus airframes.

Dr. Stathis Kefallonitis Shares Top Takeaways from the IFSA Innovation Pavilion

Following a stint hosting panel sessions at the IFSA Innovation Pavilion during APEX/IFSA EXPO, Dr. Stathis Kefallonitis, Associate Professor of Passenger Intelligence at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, shared with APEX Media that he thinks now is the perfect time for the industry to come together and innovate. In terms of sustainability, he said, “I would call what we need to do “sustaining sustainability.” Things can’t just look good on paper anymore, like using recyclable cutlery and plant-based meal boxes but not recycling them. We need processes that work.”

SmartSky and IdeaNova Partner on Secure Streaming Services

SmartSky Networks and IdeaNova Technologies have partnered to offer IdeaNova’s InTouch and InPlay applications, which provide secure web conferencing and in-flight entertainment streaming, on the SmartSky Network. SmartSky Networks’ CTO, David Claassen, said, “Integrating with technology providers like IdeaNova expands the capability and interoperability of the SmartSky connectivity platform, giving SmartSky customers more choices for using high-bandwidth applications at 35,000 ft with the same quality and security they would experience on the ground.”

Moment Launches IFE Onboard Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-800

Moment has partnered with Malaysia Airlines for the first international deployment of its embedded wireless in-flight entertainment (wireless IFE) platform, Flymingo Connect. In January 2022, Malaysia Airlines will pilot the solution onboard select Boeing 737 aircraft before rolling it out across their whole fleet. The platform’s patented system allows passengers to stream entertainment and access real-time travel information while creating ancillary revenue opportunities with its e-commerce offering.

IFSA EXPO: Meatless Farm Hopes to Appeal to Flexitarian Passengers

Meatless Farm, which sells vegan, plant-based products, is looking to partner with airlines to feature its items on their in-flight menus. The products, including burgers, chick’n cutlets and nuggets, are made from vegetables and pea proteins and offer a similar texture and flavour to meat without the environmental impact of animal agriculture. With an easy, galley-friendly preparation time, Meatless Farm said its products would allow carriers to meet passengers' growing expectations to have healthy, sustainable meal options in the air.
