GX5 Comes Online, Tripling Inmarsat's GX Capacity

What can airlines do with a massive boost in satellite capacity? We’re about to find out as Inmarsat’s GX5 satellite comes online, more than doubling the total bandwidth available to GX Aviation subscribers. The new satellite focuses capacity on Europe and the Middle East, giving a boost in a highly traveled region. It also kicks off a multi-year campaign to dramatically increase services and coverage available on the GX network. Another seven Ka-band payloads, all fully funded, are slated for launch by 2024.

A Peek Inside the New Cathay Pacific A321neo

Passengers scored a sneak-peek inside the Cathay Pacific Airbus A321neo this week as images from the initial deliveries were leaked. The photos show a business-class cabin featuring the Collins Aerospace Air Rest recliner seats and the HAECO Vector seat in economy class. These aircraft were originally destined for the now-shuttered Cathay Dragon operation. The aircraft is also expected to have the 2Ku in-flight connectivity solution installed.

Airlines Partner With Oxford in COVID Testing Study

British Airways and American Airlines will partner with researchers at the University of Oxford to review data from their recently launched COVID-19 testing trial. The oneworld alliance members offer passengers the option to participate in pre- and post-flight testing on five flights between the US and London. The groups will analyze aggregated, non-personal survey data from air travelers on their behavior and sentiment towards the trial testing regime.

United Airlines Pledges Carbon-Neutrality by 2050

United Airlines is the latest carrier to commit to a carbon-neutral operation by 2050, upping its commitment from 2018 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in the same timeframe. And the carrier plans to get there not just through buying indirect carbon offsets. United made a multi-million dollar investment in direct air capture technology, which physically removes carbon dioxide from the air. The carrier also recommitted itself to increased use of sustainable aviation fuels to continue reducing its emissions footprint.

Emirates Launches Christmas Menu

Whether in the lounge or in the sky, Emirates passengers will enjoy a range of Christmas treats through the rest of December. Turkey features strongly in the new menus across all cabins, with side dishes varying depending on the class of service. The carrier will also offer mulled wine in premium cabins from December 23 to 25. Santa’s helpers (aka flight attendants) will deliver special desserts for all passengers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
