OneWeb to Resume Satellite Launches in December

The OneWeb low-earth orbit satellite constellation is slated to resume its growth by the end of the year. The company amended its partnership with Arianespace for 16 additional launches between December 2020 and the end of 2022. The deal remains dependent on confirmation of OneWeb's restructuring plan. Each launch will add 34-46 satellites to the constellation and OneWeb expects to bring commercial service online by the end of 2021. The network will initially target the United Kingdom, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, the Arctic seas and Canada.

Senators Push for Additional US Airline Payroll Funding

A pair of US Senators introduced a bill calling for up to $28 billion in payroll support for airlines, as the prior round of support is set to expire at the end of the month. The deal targets protection of tens of thousands of airline employees that are likely to be furloughed or terminated when the CARES Act-backed payroll support program expires. Airline executives expressed thanks for the effort, though it remains unclear if the bill will progress further towards implementation.

IAMA Updates Rulebook for Streamlined Aircraft Modifications

Independent Aircraft Modifier Alliance (IAMA) has released an updated version of its Rulebook, which it first published in March with the goal of streamlining the process of certification of aircraft modifications through supplemental type certificates (STC). "The IAMA Rulebook is a living document," said Romain Mbwang Seppoh, head of Eclipse Technics, which is an IAMA founding member company. "Our goal is to continue upgrading its content with guidelines that will further streamline the STC process. A future objective is to roll out an auditing system [that] will target enforcement of the IAMA Rulebook's principles."

Avianca Secures $2 Billion in Financing

Colombia's Avianca expects to receive $2 billion in funding from existing and new investors as it works to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The deal includes roughly $1.2 billion in new funding, and the potential for up to $240 million in government support of the recapitalization plans. The funding is secured by a range of Avianca's assets, including its LifeMiles loyalty program and its cargo operations. The company recently repurchased a large portion of LifeMiles to help expand the collateral available. The funding is subject to approval from the US courts.

SITA, Safety Line Partner to Reduce Emissions

SITA will integrate data from French startup Safety Line to help improve aircraft routing and operations, aiming to realize significant fuel savings and carbon emissions reductions. Safety Line's data analysis systems deliver aircraft-specific guidance on climb-out, the heaviest fuel consumption phase of flight, as well as at cruise. The analysis modules will integrate into SITA's eWAS Pilot and Digital Day of Operations portfolio. Safety Line estimates that 5.6 million tons of CO2 could be avoided if all airlines in the world were to use OptiClimb, which uses machine learning and weather forecasts to recommend speed changes at different altitudes for each climb.

Developed in Israel, the test requires passengers to gargle with a special mouthwash and then spit into a tube. The results are delivered from a self-service kiosk in the terminal, with those testing positive referred for a nasal swab for confirmation. In Helsinki, COVID-19 testing is now being augmented by specially trained dogs. Those taking the test will swipe their skin with a test wipe and drop it into a cup, which is then given to the dog. This also protects the dog's handler from infections. All the tests are processed anonymously. Helsinki Airport to use COVID-19 sniffing dogs - World Airline News
