REAL ID Deadline Extended to 2023

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline for the enforcement of REAL ID requirements for a further 19 months from October 1, 2021 to May 3, 2023. Once enforced, passengers traveling domestically in the US will need to show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state photo identity card. The DHS cited  limited operating capacity at state driver's licensing agencies as the reason for the latest extension, and revealed that only 43% of all state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards are Real ID-compliant. The deadline has already been pushed back once from March 2020 to March 2021.
