Saudi Arabia Launches Cutting-Edge Air Mobility Initiative

Saudi Arabia’s aviation authority, GACA, has launched an initiative to revolutionize the Kingdom’s air mobility through sustainable technologies. This includes a range of solutions like unmanned aircraft and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, designed to improve efficiency and environmental impact. Tests show promise for easing congestion and improving emergency services, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s net-zero by 2060 goal. The initiative aligns with the 2022 Environmental Sustainability Development Plan in Civil Aviation, setting a regulatory framework to reduce aviation’s environmental impact.

APEX TECH 2024 To Feature IFC Deep-Dive Workshop

This year’s APEX TECH event in Los Angeles from 28-29 February will offer delegates looking to take part in an interactive workshop on the topic of in-flight connectivity (IFC) the option to participate in one of three different sessions: “How Do We Measure the Quality of Experience?”, “IFC Technology: Relevance and Readiness of ESAs, SW Defined Modems, and More”, and “Portal or Not: Different Angles on a Seamless Passenger IFC Journey.” APEX CEO Dr. Joe Leader explained, “We are at the precipice of a new dawn in IFC, one that as an association APEX wants to help shape for the maximum benefit of all.”

RECARO Aircraft Seating Selected For Historic Eve eVTOL Project

RECARO Aircraft Seating has partnered with Eve Air Mobility to provide 75,000 seats for its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a significant milestone in air transport innovation. Set to start deliveries in Q1 2025, RECARO will supply shipsets of five seats each, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving success in the eVTOL industry. Dr. Mark Hiller highlighted RECARO's expertise in lightweight design, quality, and ergonomics as pivotal to their participation in this pioneering venture.

Hawaiian Airlines Installs Starlink On A321neos With FAA Blessing

Hawaiian Airlines is advancing its inflight connectivity by equipping its Airbus A321neos with SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation system, having secured supplemental type certification from the FAA. This integration marks a significant step towards enhancing passenger experience with high-speed internet access, as Starlink operates via a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. While the installation on A321neos is underway, STC endeavors for Boeing 737 variants are also being explored. Hawaiian Airlines is set to become the first major carrier to offer Starlink’s advanced connectivity, promising free high-speed internet to all passengers.

Turbotech And Safran Test Hydrogen Turboprop

Safran and Turbotech, in collaboration with Ariane Group, have successfully tested a hydrogen-powered turboprop engine, the TP-R90, marking a pioneering step towards zero-carbon aviation for light aircraft. Conducted northwest of Paris on January 11, this test under the “BeautHyFuel” project—supported by France’s DGAC and part of the nation’s recovery plan—demonstrates the potential of converting existing technologies for eco-friendly solutions. The project, leveraging Ariane’s expertise, plans next to integrate a cryogenic liquid storage system to simulate real-world hydrogen fuel usage in planes.

Air Canada Introduces New Measures For Customers With Disabilities

Air Canada has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, a first in North America, aimed at assisting customers with non-visible disabilities like autism, enhancing the travel experience for the 1.3 million accessibility requests they receive annually. Alongside this initiative, Air Canada established a Customer Accessibility Advisory Committee to guide its three-year accessibility plan, comprising members with disabilities from Canadian accessibility groups. The program uses a sunflower lanyard to discreetly indicate that a customer may need extra assistance, which is recognized and supported by trained Air Canada staff at check-in counters and on all flights.
