American Airlines (AA) is deepening its investment in the Austin market with plans to open an Admirals Club lounge at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The space will more than double the airline’s current footprint and introduce the first outdoor terrace in the Admirals Club network. The project reflects how American continues updating its lounge strategy to keep pace with fast-growing cities and evolving expectations around comfort, space, and atmosphere.

Located on the west side of the terminal, the new Admirals Club will span more than 12,000-square-feet, offering travelers a significantly larger and more versatile space to relax in before departure. The lounge is designed around the airline’s evolving neighborhood concept: It will feature distinct zones tailored to different traveler needs, including dedicated areas for dining, quiet work, social interaction, and personal recharge.

A defining feature of the new Admirals Club will be its outdoor terrace, marking the first time AA has incorporated open-air lounge space into its global network. From there, guests will have sweeping views of both the Austin skyline and the tarmac, creating a stronger connection to the city’s outdoor lifestyle and creative energy. The concept aims to deliver a lounge that feels locally inspired while maintaining the premium comfort associated with the Admirals Club brand.

“As we elevate our presence in Austin, we’re excited to bring a new level of comfort and hospitality to our customers,” said American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden. “This new Admirals Club lounge will reflect the vibrant spirit of Austin while offering the thoughtful design and premium amenities our customers expect.”

Construction on the new space is scheduled to begin later this year, with the current Admirals Club remaining open throughout the process. Maintaining uninterrupted lounge access during construction reflects AA’s effort to minimize disruption for frequent flyers and premium customers. Once completed, the expanded footprint will provide increased seating capacity and improved circulation, particularly during peak travel periods as passenger demand continues to grow.

Austin has become an increasingly important focus city for American Airlines in recent years. The airline now operates nearly 50 daily departures from AUS to 11 destinations, connecting Central Texas travelers to more than 350 destinations worldwide through its global network. By investing in upgraded ground infrastructure, American is reinforcing its commitment to supporting local demand while enhancing the end-to-end travel journey.

Beyond physical upgrades, the new lounge will also incorporate updated service elements that reflect American’s evolving premium strategy. Customers can expect offerings such as Lavazza coffee and the option to purchase Champagne Bollinger, both part of recently announced partnerships designed to enhance the quality and consistency of lounge hospitality across the network.

Expanding Lounge Investments Across the Network

The Austin lounge project is part of a wider effort by AA to refresh and modernize its lounges at major hubs and focus cities. Rather than adopting a single standardized format, the airline increasingly tailors lounge concepts to reflect local market dynamics, passenger traffic patterns, and regional character. This approach aims to create spaces that feel more personal and context-driven while still reinforcing brand consistency.

Similar investments are underway in places like Chicago and Washington, D.C., where new or updated Admirals Club spaces aim to increase capacity and improve the premium ground experience. These projects highlight a long-term strategy focused on aligning lounge infrastructure with shifting travel patterns across both domestic and international networks.

Access to the new Austin lounge will be available through several pathways, including Admirals Club membership, qualifying oneworld status, eligible co-branded AA credit cards, one-day pass purchases, or redemption of AAdvantage miles. This multi-tiered approach allows American to extend premium ground services to a broader mix of travelers.

American’s AAdvantage loyalty program remains central to this strategy, connecting lounge access with a wider portfolio of travel benefits. By integrating enhanced ground experiences into elite status tiers, the airline strengthens the perceived value of loyalty while fostering stronger customer engagement. Projects such as the new Austin Admirals Club underscore the airline’s continued focus on comfort, productivity, and a more experience-focused airport journey.
