Tigerair Taiwan has selected Bluebox Aviation Systems to supply wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) across its Airbus A320 fleet, marking the airline’s first onboard IFE deployment. The rollout will bring streaming content directly to passengers’ personal electronic devices (PEDs) using a portable, battery-powered system. This move reflects a wider trend among low-cost airlines toward flexible, software-based digital experiences that boost passenger engagement and generate extra revenue.

Launching its First IFE Experience

Tigerair Taiwan will deploy Bluebox’s portable wireless solution across its 17 Airbus A320 aircraft. The system is powered by Bluebox Wow, a lightweight, battery-powered unit that streams content directly to passengers’ PEDs.

At the core of the platform is Blueview, Bluebox’s digital services environment, which allows users to access a library of interactive content through a browser on their laptops, tablets and phones. This approach removes the need for built-in hardware while still giving passengers a full in-flight entertainment experience.

Passengers will be able to watch a mix of protected and non-protected content, including Hollywood movies, TV shows, and regional favorites. This combination allows the airline to offer a broad and relevant content library while meeting studio requirements for content security.

The deployment represents a significant milestone for Tigerair Taiwan, which previously operated without an in-flight entertainment system. By introducing wireless IFE, the airline improves the passenger experience while maintaining the operational simplicity expected of the low-cost airline model.

“Bluebox Wow and Blueview allow airlines to introduce a modern in-flight entertainment experience quickly, while laying the foundations for future services such as onboard retail – without the complexity of traditional installations,” said Bluebox Aviation Systems CEO Kevin Clark.

“This partnership with Bluebox supports our goal of enhancing the onboard journey with a simple, accessible digital experience for our passengers. Launching in-flight entertainment for the first time is an important step in evolving our service offering,” said Tigerair Taiwan Chief Commercial Officer and Spokesman Bernard Hsu.

The use of a portable system is particularly relevant for short-haul operations. It allows airlines to deliver entertainment without adding significant weight or requiring major aircraft modifications, supporting both efficiency and scalability.

Building a Platform for Digital Retail and Revenue Growth

Beyond entertainment, the Bluebox platform is designed to support future digital services, including onboard retail. Tigerair Taiwan and Bluebox plan to expand the system in a later phase to include order-to-seat functionality, allowing passengers to browse and purchase products directly from their devices.

By integrating retail into the digital platform, the airline can create a more seamless and convenient shopping experience while increasing conversion rates. “Tigerair Taiwan has built a strong reputation for driving ancillary performance, and we’re delighted to help amplify that success with the right digital tools and a flexible infrastructure,” said Clark.

The modular nature of the Bluebox platform supports long-term scalability. Airlines can begin with entertainment and gradually add new features such as retail, connectivity integration, and additional digital services. This phased approach allows carriers to adapt their offering as passenger expectations evolve.
