Honeywell Launches Real-time Weather App

On Monday, Honeywell Aerospace launched the first version of an online weather service app that will provide pilots with real-time weather data along their planned flight path. The Weather Information Service app replaces the need for radio dispatched and paper-based weather reports or digitized versions of these reports, that lose relevancy as the flight progresses.
With real-time weather data, pilots are more capable of avoiding turbulence and dangerous weather and can do so with more accuracy, saving time, fuel and other operational costs, and of course, enhancing passenger safety and comfort.
The app was designed to be intuitive and easy to use, and includes a number of features such as weather radar, cumulonimbus cloud display, clear air turbulence prediction, satellite-derived cloud heights, icing, Significant Meteorological Information (SIGMET), Terminal Area Forecast and 3-D winds aloft that indicate the speed and direction of winds. Future developments and products in weather-monitoring software will be able to be added to app in later versions.
“As a pilot, I really like that the service provides all the real-time, worldwide weather information I need no matter where our travels take us in an intuitive app,” says Joe Duval, chief test pilot, Honeywell Aerospace. “One of the features I like the most is the ability to look ‘into the future,’ seeing how the weather is forecasted to change along my entire route to make weather related decisions early in the flight so we can avoid the hazard areas, like clear air turbulence. It is the perfect complement to our onboard IntuVue 3-D Weather Radar. Also, the optimization allows this app to update quickly, using the minimum amount of data even on lower bandwidth systems.”
