Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) has selected SITA as the information technology and communications provider for its highly anticipated Midfield Terminal scheduled to open in July 2017.

As the largest terminal in Abu Dhabi, the multi-billion dollar complex will have full passenger and cargo facilities, duty-free shops and restaurants, and is expected to receive 30 million passengers in the year after its opening.

“We are building the Midfield Terminal to exceed global standards for connectivity and high-tech integration. We will ensure that the very latest in every system is installed… Passengers will benefit from a highly sophisticated IT support system to ease and speed their journey through the airport,” says Mohamed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, chief executive officer of Abu Dhabi Airports.

SITA will be providing airport management system, common-use passenger processing platform, automated boarding gates, flight info display systems, baggage management services and technology integration over the course of a five-year deal.

AUH recently announced that it will also be the first in the Middle East to deploy SITA’s iValidate, a new boarding pass validating technology that offers enhanced security and more efficient processing for both paper and mobile tickets.

“In today’s complex airport environment, it’s important to have integrated solutions that help enhance collaboration among all stakeholders. We look forward to working with the airport and its partners to deploy a connected infrastructure platform that will help streamline operations, make the airport more efficient and create a seamless passenger experience,” says Hani El-Assaad, president, Middle East, India and Africa, SITA.

Construction of the new terminal, which began in 2013, is part ofa  nation-wide vision to create cohesion among airlines, cities, tourism and economic development in anticipation of the region’s growth and becoming one of the busiest airspaces by 2030. Once complete, Midfield Terminal, named after its location between two runways, will become home to the national carrier, Etihad Airways, and its partners.
