Airport Observation Decks

We featured the observation deck at Perth Airport within The Architecture Issue of APEX Experience, and throughout our research for that story we came across a number of additional observation decks around the world that we wanted to share. In no particular order, here’s our bonus round-up of vantage points that offer passengers a unique plane-spotting experience.
Sky Deck – Atlanta (ATL), New York (JFK)
Only accessible from Terminal F’s airside Delta Sky Club in ATL and Terminal 4 at JFK, the outdoor sky deck offers views of the runway and ramp areas. Delta Club members can access the lounge for free, or a day pass can be purchased for $50 – which includes free snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi.
Cologne/Bonn (CGN)
This observation terrace was opened in Terminal 1 at Stern C in 2012 after redesign contributions from the Aviation Friends Cologne / Bonn and CGNCommunity spotter clubs. It has a view of the main take-off and landing runway, the apron, cargo areas and also the military section. You can also take a guided tour for an additional fee.
Düsseldorf (DUS)
There are two large observation platforms at Düsseldorf to choose from: within the terminal, or from the terminal’s train station. Atop concourse B you can view the apron area and the the aircraft comings and goings. The second platform is at the (long distance, not the local) train station, where you still very close to the planes. One ticket gains you entry to both decks.
San Salvador (SAL)
This rooftop observation deck is open landside to families and friends greeting arriving passengers. It is open at all times and free to enter.
Tokyo Narita (NRT)
Terminal 1’s open air deck has convenient access points in the barriers for photographers lenses’ to fit through for unencumbered shots of the 4,000 m runway, as well as telescopes. In Terminal 2, passengers can view parked aircraft up close and personal from to additional observation locations.
Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
Another landside observation area, this one is also free of charge for all entrants and offers fantastic views of the runway area from an indoor location.
Zurich (ZRH)
Named one of the best observation decks in Europe, Zurich has the world’s first observation walkway which allows viewers to get a close look at pilots in the cockpit. The expansive terrace also has telescopes, seating, discovery centers and tours for children.
