At the 2024 APEX Content Market in Lisbon, APEX Insights Editor Stephanie Taylor spoke to Sales Manager at Atlântico Press Helena Cabral about the company’s plans to launch its own wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) offering, AP Play, in partnership with PXCom.

Founded in 1992, Atlântico Press is a Portuguese creative agency that distributes a range of media content and generates editorial solutions for its clients.

“For Atlântico Press, this expansion of the business makes perfect sense,” explained Cabral. “We have over 30 years’ experience working with TV Channels across Europe, Africa, South America and Asia; and we’ve cultivated good relationships with hundreds of production companies over the years. This platform is a natural extension of our work in content distribution, and we simply view it as a variation of the channel through which the programs are broadcasted.”

As for what makes Atlântico Press’ new offering stand out from others, Cabral said, “The creation of AP Play arose from the observation of an increasing need for a new way of offering entertainment onboard aircraft. We believe that IFE should be refreshed more quickly, with content adjusting all the time to the topics and trends of the market. Our experience in managing content for TV channels, where current affairs and the latest trends are the norm, can benefit the industry.

“We have a lot of experience in that analysis of the need for renewal and are already taking advantage of technological advances in artificial intelligence,” she continued.

By partnering with Martillac, France-based onboard digital services provider PXCom, which “specializes in software and hardware engineering in the IFE area,” Cabral said AP Play could give its customers access “to a platform that would meet all their technological needs.”

Certified by both Airbus and Boeing, PXCom is an official integrator for Airspace Link, Airbus’ open software platform, and can fuse its offerings with an airline’s in-flight connectivity provider under the OEM’s HBC Plus extension.

“With the help of PXCom, AP Play responds to the needs of the client, ticking each entertainment box and presenting when needed, a 360-degree technological solution. It can be adapted to meet the technological capabilities of each client, offering customized solutions spanning applications, wireless in-flight entertainment and content for passenger seat screens.”

Cabral revealed that Atlântico Press is currently in discussions with three African carriers regarding the commercial launch of AP Play. “We think we’ll be able to announce good news very soon,” she concluded.
