Bankrate Helps Passengers Refine Flights

With the capacity for passenger customization increasing on a near-daily basis, a key service provision will be one that allows flyers to quickly and easily understand their travel options before they commit to a flight. A new flight selection tool provided by finance website Bankrate.com does just that: Passengers can filter the offerings of many major US carriers by selecting what services or perks are most important to them.

As Jeff Katz, CEO and Chairman of Orbitz, noted in a recent MIT discussion on the Future of Air Transportation, specifically with regards to the passenger experience, “What we will see is a lot more choice, a lot more consumer segments … It will allow consumers to select and pay for a better experience.”

So if paying $25 per checked bag, and yet more for a second (or, gasp, a third), really grinds your gears every time you travel, you might like to know that Southwest and jetBlue will stow your luggage in cargo for free.

Want to select your flight based on what in-flight Wi-Fi will cost? Carriers such as Alaska Airlines, US Airways and American Airlines will ding you $16 for a day pass, but if you get into high-bandwidth territory you could be shelling out $9 per hour, such as with jetBlue.

The Bankrate.com filter is a convenient starting point for US flyers – especially if you fly frequently with a credit or loyalty card – and a clear indication that opportunities to purchase flights based on specific amenity preferences will become a higher priority for passengers as the aircraft cabin becomes more segmented.
