Emirates is giving passengers the option to personalize their own IFE playlist before they fly and sync it with the seatback screen once airborne.
Emirates customers can now create an in-flight entertainment (IFE) playlist at home, using the airline’s app, and sync it with the seatback screen on select flights. The syncing capability is currently available on over 100 of its Boeing 777 aircraft and will be made available progressively across the entire fleet, including Airbus A380 aircraft, in the coming months.
After booking a flight with Emirates, customers can access the playlist feature by navigating to “My Trips” in the menu bar and selecting the “ice in-flight entertainment” option. The app features movies (including trailers), television shows, music and podcasts, which customers can add to their playlist but clicking on a “plus sign” icon. Once on board, passengers can sync their playlist by connecting their mobile device to the in-flight Wi-Fi, entering their seat number and pairing their device by inputting the passcode displayed on the seatback screen.
“Every detail is carefully considered as we continually enhance and develop innovative products and services for our customers,” Emirates’ president Sir Tim Clark said. “This latest functionality on the Emirates app elevates the customer experience even before they step onto the aircraft. Our customers can now browse the unmatched content on offer and create personal entertainment playlists at their leisure, and once comfortably settled in their seats on board, they simply sync and press play.”
The Emirates app also allows customers to navigate the interior of the airline’s Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft in 3-D during seat selection and browse menus and wine lists up to a month before the departure date.
Qatar Airways uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to offer passengers a similar service. “The majority of our latest fleet, including aircraft with our premium Qsuite product, is fitted with NFC technology,” explained Babar Rahman, senior manager, Global Sponsorships, CSR and In-Flight Entertainment/Connectivity, Qatar. “Passengers can create playlists on the ground and enable them on board from their seats, allowing for greater ease of content selection and a personalized IFE experience.”
