With the demand for high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi on the rise, Global Eagle Entertainment today announced their plans for a new global Ku/Ku HTS antenna. Developed with antenna manufacturer QEST (Quantenelektronische Systeme GmbH), the antenna is scheduled for installation mid-2016.

The new high-speed technology boasts reliability at all latitudes, including equatorial, and is fully compatible with current Ku satellite systems. The high-speed capabilities of the technology not only deliver an excellent passenger experience but offer airlines the opportunity to  maximize on ancillary revenue.

“Through our joint development with QEST, we will provide airlines with the most advanced, high-speed connectivity technology and service in all latitudes where Ku and Ku HTS are available,” adds Aditya Chatterjee, senior vice-president of Connectivity Systems and chief technology officer at GEE.

GEE’s current  connectivity solutions include Ka Regional HTS, Ka Global, Ku Wide Area and Ku HTS Spot, with Ku HTS delivering a 30Gbps total throughput. Although the Ka technology has higher data capacities, the Ku HTS service is the most reliable and less susceptible to rain fade.

More details on the new Global Ku Antenna system will be provided at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany on April 14-16th, 2015.
