APEX Insight: Kontron unveiled a compact wireless router and gateway with enterprise-class security and open system architecture to its ACE Flight product line. The IFE and connectivity provider said it developed the ACE Flight 1600 Gateway Router after listening to feedback from its customers who had been asking for a small yet secure gateway solution.
Kontron unveiled a new secure in-flight wireless and network router to its ACE Flight product line earlier this week. The IFE and connectivity provider said the ACE Flight 1600 Gateway Router will provide airlines and business jet operators with “enterprise-class security and connectivity” in a small form factor with a fanless design.
Kontron told APEX Media the system is linefit ready and that it can support customers with installations when needed.
“The ACE Flight 1600 Gateway Router accelerates time-to-market by providing integration-ready network functionality to the connected aircraft,” – RJ McLaren
“The ACE Flight 1600 Gateway Router accelerates time-to-market by providing integration-ready network functionality to the connected aircraft. With it, airlines, business jet operators and service providers can solve a broad range of secure wireless connectivity and routing issues on the aircraft within a single platform,” said RJ McLaren, Avionics Product Manager at Kontron.
McLaren said that when Kontron conducted its original market research before developing the ACE Flight 1600 product, the company realized it had “a unique opportunity to create a new secure routing platform at half the size and half the cost of existing solutions.” The company said its customers have been asking for a small yet secure gateway solution. It said it expects customers will add their own third-party applications to the platform, but that they also have the option of using Kontron’s turnkey software application, which requires no software development.
“The response from our launch customers and others in the market has been overwhelmingly positive,” – RJ McLaren
Kontron said it has already secured commitments for several hundred Ace Flight 1600 production units from “two major aerospace customers,” and that the first installations would be scheduled to begin in the second half of this year. “The response from our launch customers and others in the market has been overwhelmingly positive,” McLaren said.
