Lufthansa Takes New York Fashion Week to New Heights

APEX Insight: Lufthansa’s Fashion Flight took to the skies to show jet-set trendsetters that the airline is not only on trend with New York’s fashion scene, but also that its high-tech in-flight entertainment has officially taken off.
A select group of passengers en route to the Big Apple today got a glimpse of New York Fashion Week before they landed, courtesy of Lufthansa and American designer Rubin Singer. The Fashion Flight saw a Boeing 747-8’s aisle converted into a 70s-style catwalk, where flight attendants modeled a retrospective of Lufthansa uniforms, from traditional Japanese Yukata to Oktoberfest dirndls, and a preview of Singer’s couture Spring 2017 collection was shown.
Haute couture went high tech with the addition of wearable accessories. Bellabeat Leaf jewelry, in silver and rose gold, tracks body rhythm and activity, allowing wearers to be stylish and health conscious simultaneously. Gemio’s LED bracelets change designs on the fly by responding to music and movement with different light patterns. Worn on the wrist, the Helix Cuff encloses miniature Bluetooth headphones with a built-in microphone, multipoint connectivity and controls, so music can be streamed à la mode. Passengers pre-registered before the flight to use a device of their choice at their seat.
For those wanting to delve deeper into tech trends, three fashion-fusion experts were on standby to deliver presentations that were live-streamed to passenger devices via Lufthansa Systems’ BoardConnect technology and Inmarsat connectivity services. “To make this happen we worked closely with Lufthansa Technik and Media Event Services to install an in-flight conferencing system,” said Nicola Vultaggio, senior product manager of BoardConnect. Five access points were positioned along the cabin to guarantee effective Wi-Fi coverage for all passengers – among them fashion influencers and trendsetters – who took to social media with the hashtag #LHFashionFlight to share the experience.
