Multiple Ways to In-Flight Destination Content

APEX Insight: From interactive city guides and informative moving maps to destination videos and the still relevant long-form travel feature, the options for vacation planning while in flight are abundant.

There are many ways to explore a city aboard an aircraft. Hop onto the in-flight entertainment system via seatback or personal electronic device, or leaf through the magazine.

    Interactive City Guides

PXCom offers interactive city guides with trusted content from Lonely Planet and Michelin Travel that allow passengers to scroll, tap or click their way through to a full travel itinerary while on board. San Francisco-based startup Wcities uses eventseeker and cityseeker to tailor location-based content for airlines, with points of interest in over 500 cities, offered in more than 21 languages.

    Travel Sites

TripAdvisor’s travel review platform, developed in partnership with Global Eagle Entertainment, is available for Air New Zealand passengers via its IFE system. Flyers can look up last-minute details about restaurants and areas of interest en route to their destination. While the content on offer is cached, in-flight connectivity could take such partnerships further.

    Moving Map

Enhance your flight with real-time trivia as you fly over points of interest. Betria Interactive’s FlightPath3D moving map displays fun facts about cities. Themed moving maps for kids, history buffs, geography gurus and sports fans add layers of personalization to the experience.

    Video Guides

Pilot Guides’ destination videos put passengers with a penchant for adventure, rather than five-star hotels or shopping malls, in their hosts’ shoes – a pair of trekking boots – to explore sights in Africa, Antarctica and Asia. Or, discover America through its coffee culture, or England through its architecture. These videos draw travelers to destinations with content on people, culture and heritage.

    In-Flight Magazine

Despite all the digital options, there’s still a place for the long-form travel feature inside in-flight magazines. Bookmark, the newly branded content marketing arm of Spafax Group, is the publisher behind several such magazines. Writers and photographers are sent to all parts of the world to mine stories that inspire travelers to explore an airline’s network of destinations.
