United Airlines has introduced a new TSA wait time tracker within its mobile app, giving travelers real-time visibility into airport security lines. The feature, now available across United’s US hub airports, provides estimated wait times for standard screening and TSA PreCheck lanes. As part of a pilot program, the tool aims to help passengers better plan their journeys and move through the airport with greater confidence.
Bringing Real-Time Security Visibility to the Travel Journey
United’s new mobile app feature, which integrates estimated Transportation Security Administration (TSA) wait times directly into the travel experience, marks a first-of-its-kind offering from a major US airline. Available to view within the Travel section of the United mobile app, the tracker updates throughout the day to reflect changing conditions at security.
“Our customers rely on our mobile app for all their travel needs, and this new feature lets them know what to expect and better plan their trip.”

Passengers traveling through United’s major hub airports, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., can now view estimated wait times at security checkpoints in terminals serving United customers before arriving at the airport. The tool also breaks down wait times by screening type, allowing travelers to compare standard lanes with TSA PreCheck and choose the most efficient option.
By giving passengers visibility into security wait times, United is addressing one of the most unpredictable parts of the airport experience. Rather than arriving early without clear expectations, travelers can better time their arrival, reduce uncertainty, and navigate airport terminals more efficiently.

“We appreciate the work and professionalism of our TSA agents, and while most began receiving back pay [last] week, the US Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues and people want to stay informed about expected security wait times at our airports,” said United Airlines Chief Information Officer Jason Birnbaum. “Our customers rely on our mobile app for all their travel needs, and this new feature lets them know what to expect and better plan their trip.”
The feature also reflects broader operational realities across US airports, where fluctuating passenger volumes and staffing levels can lead to variable wait times.
Importantly, United said the tracker is designed as a planning tool rather than a guarantee. Estimated wait times are based on available data and may vary from actual conditions, but they still provide valuable guidance for travelers navigating busy airport environments.
Expanding Digital Tools for a More Connected Passenger Experience
The TSA wait time tracker builds on United’s broader strategy to enhance the travel experience through digital innovation. The airline has consistently expanded its mobile app capabilities, positioning it as a central hub for managing every stage of the journey.
Among the app’s most widely used features are day-of-travel tools that provide real-time updates and guidance. The Virtual Gate feature offers a centralized view of boarding information, while a bag tracking tool allows passengers to follow their luggage in real time, similar to package delivery services.
United has also introduced personalized connection tools that help travelers navigate large airports more easily. These include step-by-step directions to connecting gates, estimated walking times, and real-time flight updates, all designed to reduce stress during tight connections.

Additional enhancements focus on improving disruption management. The app’s automatic rebooking feature provides personalized alternatives in the event of delays or cancellations, along with information on baggage and eligibility for meal or hotel vouchers. This reduces the need for passengers to wait in line for assistance, allowing them to resolve issues more quickly.
Real-time weather updates also help passengers stay informed. With radar maps and notifications, United provides a clearer picture of how weather across its network could affect flights, even if the disruption is happening elsewhere.
The integration of TSA wait times fits naturally into this ecosystem, creating a more connected and informed travel experience where passengers have the information they need at every step. It also highlights a broader move toward greater transparency and self-service, as real-time updates and personalized tools become essential for a smoother journey.
