Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has entered a strategic partnership with mobile telecom provider 3 to strengthen both its operational connectivity and the passenger experience across its network. The agreement will see 3 manage SAS’ global operational mobile communications while enabling free onboard Wi-Fi for EuroBonus members and 3 customers on Starlink-equipped aircraft. Together, the partnership positions connectivity as a seamless extension of the travel journey from ground to air.

Strengthening Operational Connectivity Across the Network

At the core of the partnership is an upgrade to SAS’ operational connectivity infrastructure. By working with 3, the airline gains enhanced mobile network capabilities that support day-to-day operations across its global footprint. As part of the agreement, 3 will manage SAS’ worldwide operational mobile communications while supporting the rollout of free Starlink connectivity onboard.

This includes more reliable and scalable communication systems for crew, ground teams, and operational workflows, ensuring that connectivity supports real-time decision making and coordination. As airlines continue to digitize operations, secure and stable communication networks have become essential to maintaining efficiency across increasingly complex global networks.

The partnership represents a step forward in enterprise connectivity capabilities. By delivering reliable mobile communication solutions, the collaboration supports SAS’ operational needs while creating a foundation for further digital integration.

It also reflects a broader industry trend, where airlines are partnering with telecommunications providers to strengthen the infrastructure behind their operations. Rather than treating connectivity as a standalone feature, SAS is embedding it into its core operational systems.

Enhancing Passenger Experience Through Seamless Connectivity

Beyond operational improvements, the partnership introduces new customer-facing benefits centered on in-flight connectivity (IFC). EuroBonus members and customers of 3 will receive free onboard Wi-Fi on SAS aircraft equipped with Starlink, extending a key loyalty benefit across all cabins.

Such partnerships are increasingly common across the in-flight connectivity landscape. T-Mobile was one of the first to do this, teaming up with Gogo to offer free Wi-Fi on certain flights, depending on the customer’s plan. This approach helped establish expectations around bundled connectivity tied to mobile and loyalty ecosystems.

The move aligns with growing passenger expectations for consistent, high-quality connectivity throughout the travel journey. As digital access becomes increasingly essential, offering free, reliable Wi-Fi is no longer a differentiator but a baseline requirement for many travelers.

“By combining 3’s technological capabilities with SAS’ network and EuroBonus ecosystem, we gain scalable connectivity and the opportunity to explore new services that connect the travel experience on the ground, in the air, and across the world,” said SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff.

The integration of free Wi-Fi into the EuroBonus program also strengthens the airline’s loyalty proposition. By making connectivity a core benefit, SAS enhances engagement with both existing and newly enrolled members.

“For our customers and EuroBonus members, it delivers an uninterrupted travel experience connected from your doorstep to your final destination, with the same strong connection wherever your journey takes you. And this is just the first step. We see significant potential to create even more value across our markets as the partnership grows,” said 3 Regional CEO Denmark, Sweden and Austria Morten Christiansen.

Looking ahead, SAS and 3 are exploring deeper integration between the EuroBonus program and 3’s mobile services. This could include bundled offerings, expanded loyalty benefits, and a more connected experience across the entire journey.
