APEX Insight: For cultivating homegrown Canadian talent, welcoming international travelers with world titles in multiple languages and raising in-flight entertainment standards by pioneering accessible media solutions, Air Canada takes home the APEX Award for Best Video Curation.
Offered to all customers free of charge, Air Canada enRoute Inflight Entertainment features an expansive range of content, available through seatback on its legacy carrier and wireless streaming on its subsidiary, Air Canada rouge.
As Canada’s flag carrier, the airline showcases national content with three new Canadian releases each month, a library of Canadian classics and the Air Canada enRoute Film Festival, which cultivates homegrown cinematic talent. “Air Canada is continuously looking to offer its customers original Canadian content,” says Éric Lauzon, manager of Multimedia Entertainment. Working in close partnership with its content service provider, Spafax, Can-Con from the National Film Board of Canada and other outlets showcase recognizable canucks, from Leonard Cohen to Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany.

In compliance with Canada’s Official Languages Act, everything from the graphical use interface to the in-flight magazine is available in French and English. For international clientele, Hollywood hits and 23 world titles are stocked monthly, with content available in more than 20 languages.
Air Canada has also pioneered accessible media, developing a visually impaired solution with Global Eagle Entertainment, including closed captioning and dynamic subtitles and featuring specialty content for the hearing impaired. Technology across the airline’s fleet ranges from Panasonic’s eX3 and eXW systems, Thales’ i4500 solution and tablet support from Bluebox Avionics, making streamlining a consistent offering a complicated undertaking.
