Big Data is a Big Priority for Airports, Says Thales

At the Passenger Terminal EXPO (PTE) in Paris, Thales featured its new information management system which allows airport operators to better manage infrastructure and resources while catering to passenger needs.
As Thales explains, there are “four key drivers of the Big Data revolution: Volume, Variety, Velocity and Value.” The amount of data we can now gather about passengers and operations is rising exponentially. The source of all that data can be in-house or come from sources outside the organization. It can be gathered in different platforms and structured in various formats. To be most useful, all of the information gathered must be processed dynamically and organized for easy interpretation.
“It is a decision-enabling solution that allows the operator to make the right decisions at the right time by extracting the most relevant and useful data.” -Pascal Zenoni, Thales.
The objective of the Thales’ Big Data solution is to ensure that customers can take large volumes of data, regardless of originating platform, and quickly reap insights helpful to reduce costs and ensure efficiencies. This information can also enhance revenue by shining a light on missed opportunities to provide value-added services and products to customers.
“Thales’s Big Data solution has the capability to present seemingly complex concepts in a clear and simplified way,” says Pascal Zenoni, product line manager of Identity Management at Thales. At the Thales booth, Zenoni demonstrates a highly intuitive system with a clean interface, which makes interpreting all that data as simple as a quick point and click. Depending on the type of data to be analyzed, the system generates easy to interpret charts, graphs and maps for any range of time or data filter the operator requires.
“It is a decision-enabling solution, that allows the operator to make the right decisions at the right time by extracting the most relevant and useful data,” Zenoni says. He explains that the system can be expanded easily to incorporate any data sets that the airport facility could find useful.
The patterns revealed by the data collected and organized by the Thales solution, can include passenger demographic trends, airport resource utilization and traffic flow, just as examples. It is information from which both the airport operator and its customer airlines can benefit.
