APEX Insight: Even in lighting, personalization, privacy and branding are key. STG Aerospace’s square-beam reading light and saf-Tglo blu floor path-marking lights advance these trends in innovative ways.

STG Aerospace has unveiled liTeMood LED reading lights as an affordable plug and play replacement for Boeing 737-NG incandescent reading lights. Designed to provide passengers with more privacy, the reading lights incorporate a patented photometric design that shines the light in a direct square-beam, which prevents light spill onto other passenger seats.

“Traditional lights can flow into the passengers seated on either side of you, and this light is designed to shine precisely on your personal space,” Nigel Duncan, CEO, STG Aerospace, tells APEX Media. “If the person next to you is sleeping, the last thing they want is to be woken up by a reading light flashing into their eyes … The square-beam reading light gives a passenger control.”

Beyond affording privacy, advanced lighting solutions can significantly enhance the passenger experience. “Lighting affects your visual recognition of things. If you have a high-quality reading light, for example, with a high Color Rendering Index, it allows you to see what you’re reading very quickly and easily,” explains Duncan. LiteMood is also designed to reduce the glare on tray tables, eBooks and tablets – an enhancement that has become increasingly important with the rise in airlines offering device-based in-flight entertainment solutions.

Findings from early-stage studies may also suggest that attractive lighting boosts the onboard retail environment. “Airlines are constantly looking for more and more ways that they can improve their revenues, and we believe lighting is a considerably important factor that can positively influence the retail environment,” says Duncan. The aircraft cabin lighting specialist is conducting research to further this potential.

“Airlines have gotten more interested in their brand, and they’re looking for colors to be a part of the brand, not independent of it.” – Nigel Duncan, CEO, STG Aerospace

STG Aerospace also launched saf-Tglo blu, a first-of-its-kind blue-glowing photoluminescent floor-path marking system. The blue glowing lighting transitions from the traditional green glow to blue with the intention of improving the cabin aesthetic without compromising safety. “Airlines have gotten more interested in their brand, and they’re looking for colors to be a part of the brand, not independent of it,” Duncan explains. Over the last few years, STG developed PatternMatch – a process that facilitates the matching of floor path lights to the carpet color, so they can blend in more seamlessly when not needed for safety.
