APEX Insight: PXCom’s new service PXVision is on display at Paris Air Show this week. The live 360-degree external video is streamed through an airline’s in-flight entertainment system and includes an interactive augmented reality experience.

Two French aviation companies, PXCom and IrisAero, have partnered to create PXVision, a new service allowing passengers to witness a live 360-degree external video stream in 4K through an airline’s in-flight entertainment system. The service has been integrated into a tablet-based IFE demonstration as part of regional aircraft manufacturer ATR’s showcase at Paris Air Show this week.

“PXVision allows passengers to discover points of interest the aircraft is flying over in real time.”  – Cyril Jean, PXCom CEO

According to PXCom, whether streamed through a seatback IFE screen or a passenger’s personal electronic device (if the airline offers wireless IFE), PXVision also includes an interactive augmented reality experience. “PXVision allows passengers to discover points of interest the aircraft is flying over in real time,” explained Cyril Jean, CEO of PXCom, which won the APEX Cool Award at the 2016 APEX EXPO in Singapore. “Should the camera be mounted on top of the aircraft, passengers will be able to discover constellations in the sky, for example. We add in pictograms which the passengers can click on, and a pop-up or a microsite appears on the screen.

“We’re also looking at real-time gaming, such as gathering up Pokémon-like points of interest throughout the flight,” Jean continued. He confirmed that it will be possible to have two cameras mounted on the aircraft – one on the top and one on the belly of the plane – and both videos will merge to enable a full spherical view around the aircraft. Jean also claims this solution is far more affordable than those offered by any other existing aviation cameras.
