Vistara’s Dreamliners Promote Well-Being With Human Centric Lighting

Vistara’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, the first of which was delivered to the airline on 29 February, is equipped with jetlite’s Human Centric Lighting system to enhance passenger well-being, reduce the effects of jet lag and ease cabin crew workload.
As Indian airline Vistara unveils the first of six new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners this month, passengers will notice something special as the cabin lighting is switched on. Vistara, jetlite and Boeing put their heads together in the airframer’s hometown of Everett, Washington, to create customized lighting scenes that combat jet lag and promote well-being in what can, for some, be a stressful space.
“Human Centric Lighting” is the term jetlite uses for its lighting solution, which was launched at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in 2019. It leverages the cues that light delivers to the human body to help travelers adjust their biorhythms to match their destinations. Though human-centric, this lighting is not human-managed: Rather, it is automated using a tiny onboard controller. The flight crew simply needs to “press play,” as it were.

“Since inception, Vistara has focused on delivering an exceptional in-flight experience that enhances our customers’ wellness,” said Vistara’s chief commercial officer Vinod Kannan in a press release. “Cabin lighting is one of the elements that makes this possible and we are delighted to partner with jetlite for their cutting-edge Human Centric Lighting. This will help us to take the Vistara flying experience to the next level for travelers.”
Part of Airbus Bizlab Hamburg’s initial cohort of startups back in 2015, jetlite saw its lighting setups debut aboard Lufthansa’s A350 fleet, and the carrier also retrofitted the Human Centric Lighting system aboard its 747-8 aircraft. At ground level, jetlite has rolled out prototypes for interior lighting for the Porsche Panamera 4S and the makeup mirror of the Audi A8.
“Vistara’s lighting scenes by jetlite are based on the findings of Human Centric Lighting and chronobiology, backed by extensive research studies and real test flights,” said Dr. Achim Leder, jetlite’s co-founder and managing director, in a release. “Apart from that, jetlite customizes Human Centric Lighting solutions individually for each airline, taking factors such as corporate design, the effect on CMF (colors, material and finishing) and cultural background into consideration.”
The premium economy and economy cabins on Vistara’s new Dreamliners were provided by Recaro Aircraft Seating, another one of jetlite’s early partners.
