In the lead-up to APEX EXPO, Astronics has introduced new connectivity and power solutions that will be on display in LA.

Instead of relying on a single, large server unit for the onboard storage of in-flight entertainment (IFE) content, Astronics’ new Edge Cabin Network Platform utilizes a distributed computing system architecture. The compact unit is sized to be installed in any aircraft, from regional jets to wide-bodies, and multiple Edge units can be connected to provide passengers with an improved Wi-Fi and IFE experience.

“The Edge platform has the advantage of being more flexible from an installation standpoint and distributes certain system functions which can increase system reliability,” said Michael C. Kuehn, president of Astronics Connectivity Systems and Certification (CSC).

Bringing the connected aircraft onto the flight deck has been made easier with Astronics’ introduction of an extended range version of its webFB® Aircraft Interface Device (AID). An ultra-compact router/server, the AID now can wirelessly link to cabin network systems, improving in-flight data collection and post-flight transfer.

“This addition allows for the webFB to now stream aircraft data or calculated parameters off the aircraft to airline operations or third party application providers,” said Jon Neal, president of Astronics Ballard Technology. The webFB is already being used to link a pilot’s tablet-based electronic flight bag (EFB) with the plane’s data stream to feed EFB apps such as aircraft performance programs.

More than 260 airlines are flying with Astronics’ in-seat power solutions, and the company has made the retrofit process easier with its new EmPower® Xpress USB outlet housing. Quickly attaching to the seat tube without affecting the seat structure, the housing eliminates the need to recertify the seats. The EmPower Xpress can be configured to hold either single or dual Type-A and Type-C USB outlet units.

Also, at its APEX EXPO booth, Astronics will explore applications for Li-Fi and gesture control technology on aircraft, and host Tech Talks on topics such as “A Look Ahead at What’s Next for the Internet of Flight.”
