This week, FlightPath3D introduced Sunset View, a cinematic map originally created for private jets, to the commercial airline market. The launch highlights FlightPath3D’s goal to turn the in-flight map from a simple navigation tool into an engaging and emotive part of the travel experience.

A New Horizon for In-flight Maps

FlightPath3D President Duncan Jackson said, “With the cinematic-style immersion of Sunset View, we’re expanding the luxury in-flight experience from Gulfstreams to gates. We believe the in-flight map should be part of the journey, breath-taking and cinematic, elevating every moment in the air. We built these views for the most discerning of flyers and we’re proud to now offer the ultimate experience to millions more.”

Sunset View recreates what the FlightPath3D team calls “a moment of calm in the clouds.” The experience centers on where the sun is setting in real time, automatically adjusting the map’s angle and lighting to reveal a glowing horizon. As the sun moves across the planet, passengers see gradual shifts in color and light that mirror the natural rhythm of the day. That way, even when windows are closed or weather blocks the view, travelers can still enjoy a peaceful and immersive visual escape.

By blending accuracy with artistry, FlightPath3D invites passengers to slow down and rediscover the beauty of flight. The feature’s gentle transitions and warm tones create the same quiet awe felt during an actual sunset, now shared by everyone on board.

From Private Jets to Commercial Cabins

This is not the first time that FlightPath3D’s work in business aviation has been introduced to the commercial airline market. The company did the same with its Flying Over Places feature, which includes more than 100,000 points of interest and helps passengers learn about the geography, culture, and landmarks they are passing, thereby turning casual map-watching into an engaging learning experience.

Another FlightPath3D innovation, Aircraft 360, was initially designed for private jet owners who wanted to admire their aircraft in detail. The tool shows a realistic 3D model of the exact plane a passenger is flying on, complete with accurate wings, engines, and antennas that can be rotated and zoomed in on.

Behind the visuals is advanced technology that blends real-time data, AI, and high-quality graphics to make the experience both accurate and beautiful. The map updates automatically with the aircraft’s exact position, adjusting the lighting, weather, and camera angles as the flight progresses.

Elevating Connection in the Sky

As airlines look to personalize in-flight entertainment, FlightPath3D shows how emotive design can deepen passenger engagement.

Using a cloud-based system, Sunset View updates seamlessly across fleets and displays live sunset positions that match real flight data. The result is an authentic and visually captivating experience that mirrors the world outside.

For many travelers, the in-flight map is the first screen they check after take-off and the last they see before landing. By reimagining it as a cinematic story, FlightPath3D gives airlines a new way to express their brand values and create a lasting impression.

FlightPath3D also recently launched a new feature called Destination Stories that brings airline and travel content and recommendations to the fore. Furthermore, at this year’s APEX Global EXPO, the company received the 2026 APEX Award for Best Innovation in Inflight Entertainment for its Kids Map.
