Lufthansa is expanding its onboard dining program with five hot meals available for Economy Class passengers on short- and medium-haul flights beginning September 1, 2026. The new meals will be available exclusively through pre-order on flights lasting at least two hours, giving passengers more choice before they board. Lufthansa is also expanding its Business Class pre-selection program, giving passengers more main course options and bringing the service to most long-haul flights returning to Germany.

Hot Meals Expand Lufthansa’s Onboard Delights Menu

The latest update builds on Lufthansa’s Onboard Delights program, which offers Economy Class passengers a selection of fresh meals, snacks, and beverages for purchase on short- and medium-haul flights.

Introduced in February 2023, the program has continued to expand with additional food and beverage options, including meals that passengers can order before departure. Beginning September 1, Lufthansa will add five hot dishes to the pre-order menu on flights lasting two hours or longer.

Passengers will be able to choose from beef roulade with potato dumplings, chicken teriyaki, tortellini in tomato sauce with zucchini, Dönninghaus “Die Echte” currywurst, and a cheeseburger from HANS IM GLÜCK. The beef roulade, chicken teriyaki, and tortellini come with dessert, while the currywurst is served with a roll.

The expanded menu gives passengers a mix of German favorites and international options, including beef roulade, currywurst, chicken teriyaki, and tortellini, while the HANS IM GLÜCK cheeseburger brings a recognizable restaurant brand to Lufthansa’s onboard menu.

Unlike other items available through Onboard Delights, the five hot meals will only be available through pre-order. Travelers can place an order from four weeks up to 24 hours before departure, giving them more choice while making sure their preferred meal is available onboard.

“With these hot meals, we’re expanding Onboard Delights to offer our passengers on longer continental flights an additional selection,” said Lufthansa Head of Hospitality Catering Management Olaf Mauthe. “Pre-ordering guarantees our guests that their desired meal will be waiting for them on board, for a relaxed and predictable journey.”

The addition of hot meals expands Lufthansa’s Economy Class dining options on longer short- and medium-haul flights. Instead of only choosing from snacks or lighter items onboard, passengers can plan ahead and reserve a more complete meal before they travel.

The pre-order model also makes the experience more predictable, since travelers know their selected meal will be available during the flight. It gives passengers another way to personalize their Onboard Delights experience before departure.

Business Class Pre-Select Expands Across Long-Haul Network

Lufthansa is extending the same focus on choice to its long-haul Business Class experience by expanding its existing main course pre-selection program.

Business Class passengers departing from Frankfurt and Munich have been able to select their preferred main course before departure since August 2023. Beginning September 1, Lufthansa will expand the service to most long-haul flights returning to Germany.

The airline is increasing the number of choices available at the same time. Business Class passengers will be able to select from six main courses before their flight, doubling the previous selection of three. Like the new Economy Class hot meals, Business Class main courses can be selected from four weeks until 24 hours before departure.

The expansion gives more passengers the ability to choose their preferred meal before boarding and brings greater consistency to the pre-selection experience across Lufthansa’s long-haul network. Travelers who use the service can plan their inflight meal in advance rather than waiting until the onboard service begins.

For Business Class passengers, meal selection is an important part of the premium experience, particularly on longer flights. Expanding the number of choices from three to six gives travelers a wider selection while extending the program to most inbound long-haul flights makes the service available across more of the journey.
