SES and Finnair have announced a new agreement to introduce multi-orbit inflight connectivity (IFC) across 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The new service will combine SES’s satellite network with electronically steered array (ESA) antenna technology to provide passengers with faster, more reliable internet access during their flights. The first equipped aircraft is expected to enter service in 2027, marking another step in Finnair’s efforts to improve its onboard passenger experience.

Multi-Orbit Connectivity Aims to Improve the Passenger Experience

The new inflight Wi-Fi service will use SES’s multi-orbit network, combining geostationary (GEO) satellite services with low Earth orbit (LEO) capacity from Eutelsat’s OneWeb network. The combination aims to provide more consistent internet access, improve connection speeds, and reduce delays when passengers use online services during flights.

Passengers will be able to use the service to communicate with family and friends, stream content, work online, and access digital services. The partnership supports Finnair’s efforts to provide an onboard internet experience similar to what travelers expect on the ground.

“Inflight Wi-Fi is a core part of the travel experience,” said SES Senior Vice President Aviation Blane Boynton. “SES’s multi-orbit network delivers the reliability, performance and flexibility airlines need today while providing a clear path for future growth.”

Finnair Plans Connectivity Rollout Across 18 Aircraft

Under the agreement, Finnair’s 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft will receive SES’s electronically steered array antennas during production at Embraer. Installing the equipment before delivery will allow the aircraft to enter service with the connectivity system already in place.

The agreement follows Finnair’s March 2026 announcement of a major narrowbody fleet renewal, which included a firm order for 18 E195-E2 aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027, with the new aircraft operated by Finnair’s regional partner Norra. Along with the new connectivity service, the E195-E2s will feature modern seats, USB charging at every seat, and a cabin layout without middle seats.

“Customer needs are at the heart of everything we do at Finnair, and connectivity is an increasingly important part of the overall travel experience,” said Finnair Chief Customer Officer Simon Large. “We are excited to partner with SES to bring a home-like broadband experience to our customers.”

Eutelsat Vice President for Aviation and Maritime Thierry Polycarpe said OneWeb’s high-speed, low-latency network will support passengers’ growing demand for real-time online services while complementing SES’s GEO satellite coverage.
