Iberia is the latest carrier to offer voice-controlled flight check-in, following in the steps of airlines including United and Virgin Australia.

Iberia has announced that it will allow members of its loyalty program to check in using Amazon Alexa. This is the second Alexa skill offered by the airline, which already uses the voice-activated virtual assistant to provide flight information to customers and calculate the number of Avios loyalty points required for a specified route.

After syncing Alexa with their Iberia Plus profiles, travelers can inquire about flight status and check in. The boarding pass is then sent automatically to the member’s email address. This service is available for all destinations in the Schengen area, except the Madrid-Barcelona Puente Aereo shuttle service.

“With the new Iberia Plus skill for Alexa we are … improving the travel experience of our most loyal customers, who can now ask Alexa to deliver their boarding passes only using their voice,” said Gabriel Perdiguero, Iberia’s chief transformation officer. “It’s another step forward in our strategy of going wherever our customers are.”

United was the first airline to give customers the option to check in using an Alexa-enabled device when it launched the service in September 2017. Virgin Australia followed suit one year later, becoming the first airline outside of North America to launch voice check-in with Alexa. This year, United began offering a similar check-in service via the Google Assistant.

Other airlines, including Air Canada and Air New Zealand, offer Alexa skills for flight information and status. American Airlines customers can access information about the entertainment available on their flight using the Spafax Profile skill for Alexa. At the end of last year, SunExpress enabled flight booking via Alexa using Amazon Pay. In June of this year, KLM launched a skill that suggests destinations based on information provided by the customer.
