Niall McBain has helmed global entertainment, creative and media agency Spafax from the company’s London office for almost three decades, steering the company through countless economic and geopolitical challenges during his tenure. This year, he is one of two recipients of the APEX Lifetime Achievement award, which honors aviation leaders for transformative, career-long contributions to enhancing passenger experience.
McBain will receive the physical award during a ceremony at the 2026 APEX FTE EXPO in Singapore on November 19. You can register for the event here.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
When asked about the most challenging moments during his career so far, McBain remembered being in Brisbane, Australia at the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) conference during 9/11. “I was watching the news with a client when the second plane hit the towers.
“But nothing beats the universal impact that was COVID,” he continued. “I had never dealt with that kind of cascading decline of business. I found the continual negativity of it really challenging, and it came at a time when, completely unrelated to COVID, my family had suffered a huge loss with the passing of my brother.
“The whole period taught me about how to tend to your resilience,” explained McBain. “I needed to create some distance between my home life and my work life; hence I kept going into the office. I built routines for getting through the day, and literally thanked the Lord every night for Schitt’s Creek!”
Luckily, it is these kinds of exceptional situations that keep McBain motivated. “Every few years you get existential challenges that force you to rethink the business; to invent new services in order to keep making money,” he said. “Working in two amazing global sectors like entertainment and aviation, there really is no time to be bored. You have to continually innovate; to keep defining your relevance. You see the best of people in those circumstances.”

He believes this dynamic environment is why so many people, like himself, stay in the industry long-term.
Pride in People and Products, Not Profits
McBain joined Spafax as an Account Manager in 1995 before becoming UK Managing Director in 1998 and then CEO in 1999. Early on, he acquired the first syndication of the Olympic Games TV programming for airlines. Despite achievements like this, he does not pinpoint specific contracts or projects when questioned about his career highlights.
Instead, he chooses to focus on the humans behind Spafax, both past and present, who are affectionately referred to as ‘Spafaxians.’ “We are a wide-ranging group always attempting to provide clients with the highest calibre of work. Sometimes it takes huge reserves of creativity and tenacity, often unseen and unspoken.
“I am proud when I see a comprehensive schedule of programming, insightfully curated and creatively presented. I am proud when I see a multi-territory advertising campaign sold around the world to the benefit of our client airlines. I am proud when I see inspiring innovation, whether in the work of a studio production, a print or digital publication, or in products led by Tech Services. And I am proud of our accuracy delivering content and data at a huge scale with some very complex constraints on technology.”
In her award nomination for McBain, Paramount Pictures SVP Non-Theatrical Sales Joan Fillipini picked up on this magnanimity. She commented, “Throughout Niall McBain’s career, he has led with a rare combination of integrity and genuine kindness. In an environment where one is often sacrificed for the other, he proved you can be successful while remaining a decent, compassionate human being.”

IFEC Remains a Crucial Part of the Passenger Journey
Looking to the future of the in-flight entertainment (IFE) industry, he foresees his career arc coming full circle. McBain helped launch the UK’s first direct-to-home satellite TV service in 1987. He quips, “I started my career in Satellite broadcasting, and it looks most likely I will end it back there!”
McBain elaborated, “I always thought IFE would end up central to airline customer marketing, so for me it is no surprise that leading airlines are now revitalizing their loyalty programs using connectivity and content.
“Years ago, our senior team met with some of WPP’s finest minds, and we concluded that airline audiences were truly one of the most interesting and hard to reach customers in the world.
“It is IFE, or content more broadly, that is their companion at every touchpoint of the passenger journey. I firmly see IFEC as the ‘wrapper’ for the future content mix which will cater to the different modalities of the airline customer, depending upon their mood and their point in the journey. It provides a personalized space where they can relax, be informed or make plans. It is a platform and space for itineration, exploration and creative flow.
“Flying, and particularly flying with a connected feedback loop, is a whole new category for the ‘attention economy.’ And I think we will see and work on more integrated ecosystems where entertainment, promotions, retail partners and brands create offers and possibilities we are only just beginning to see,” McBain concluded.

Pioneering Change at Industry Level
As the need for cross-industry collaboration continues to grow, McBain recognized the role of APEX as “an important meeting place and regulator for the industry.” He went on, “As with anything voluntary, it relies on the goodwill and dedication of those involved. The industry will experience cycles of expansion and contraction, of economic change or technical development, and changing priorities in travel. APEX serves us all well when it acts as a catalyst in this space, setting agendas and confronting change.”
Putting his beliefs into action, McBain has actively supported the association throughout his career. Spafax has maintained a continuous presence across the major APEX events, including APEX TECH, APEX Content Market and APEX EXPO, with employees (including McBain himself) regularly taking part in conference sessions and workshops to share insights and provide thought leadership alongside the company’s sponsorship of and attendance at the exhibitions.
He also encourages his team to spend time advancing the industry as a whole. Spafax SVP Content Experience Maura Chacko recently stepped down from the APEX Board of Directors after a decade of service, and now Spafax SVP Global Business Development and Growth Dimitrios Tsirangelos has now stepped up to the plate.
APEX Group CEO Dr. Joe Leader reflected on McBain’s commitment to APEX through a defining early interaction, noting that McBain openly shared how Spafax had absorbed a significant financial loss in printing APEX Experience magazine. “This willingness to prioritize industry advancement over immediate return reflects a deeper sense of stewardship and purpose that defines his leadership,” Leader said.
McBain’s commitment is recognized across the board. Fellow APEX Lifetime Achievement Award winner for 2026, Terry Steiner International President Terry Steiner, emphasized in her nomination of McBain, “Since he began his role as CEO of Spafax over 25 years ago, Niall has led the way for innovative and transformational relationships between service providers, airlines and film distributors. Niall’s leadership qualities include connection, partnership and collaboration.”
Niall is similarly complimentary about his fellow 2026 APEX Lifetime Achievement Award winner. “I have had the pleasure of working alongside Terry for many years, and I couldn’t think of a more deserving member of the IFEC community to share this accolade with. I look forward to continuing our working relationship, and our friendship, for years to come.”

The Importance of Travel: A Personal Perspective
As well as presenting its fair share of challenges, McBain’s time at Spafax has also allowed him to travel, and to fall in love with new places. In terms of personal highlights, McBain revealed, “My favorite over the years has been the Newport Beach area of Orange County in California,” where Spafax set up in 2014. The company also has larger offices in New York, Dubai, Frankfurt, Madrid and Santiago.
“I tried learning to surf there, with an old instructor called Rick who had a mustache Gandalf would have been proud of,” McBain divulged about Newport Beach. “He would meet me at his ‘office,’ a patch of sand between two palm trees. And although I was rarely successful, it was so exhilarating the few times I stayed up! I also began to appreciate the enormous amount of nature and life in the Pacific Ocean. As an homage to that, in London I have a large seascape painting by Relja Penezic, which beautifully captures that fantastic quality of light and endless horizon you see there.”

A Career Where Continuity Meets Continuous Reinvention
During his time at Spafax, McBain has shaped how airlines design, deliver, and leverage content as a core component of the passenger journey, elevating IFE from a supporting feature into a strategic driver of brand differentiation and customer engagement. He has transformed Spafax from a traditional content provider into a global platform integrating media, technology, analytics, and creative services, while building a “best in class” workforce.
Importantly, his days in the industry are not yet over, and he means to carry on in the same way as he has done for the last thirty years. McBain rounded off his interview with a rallying cry to his fellow Spafaxians, APEX and industry colleagues: “Keep imagineering!’”
