AIX 2024: IdeaNova Debuts Inplay Edge; SPI Selects IdeaNova’s DRM Technology for RAVE IFE

IdeaNova Technologies (IdeaNova) has made two announcements at this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX): The company has launched Inplay Edge, which enables content caching to allow for more efficient use of an airline’s in-flight connectivity services. It has also been selected by Safran Passenger Innovations (SPI) to provide the Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology across SPI’s RAVE Wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems.

InPlay Edge is a software-only package that can be deployed on any existing IFE hardware. It allows content such as news, sports and other relevant event updates to be pre-positioned before take-off using terrestrial networks, as well as for subscription streaming content to be cached during flight just once, when the first passenger accesses the content. In both cases, the cost of a passenger streaming content to personal devices or seatback screens is made significantly more affordable.

The solution was developed using Streaming Video Technology Alliance’s (SVTA) open caching specification and based on the content delivery network (CDN) interoperability standard. It also allows airlines to update cache management policies over the air, meaning content can be adjusted based on factors like the season, availability of new content and storage availability, for example.

InPlay Edge allows for rapid onboarding of participating content providers, but IdeaNova says some integration effort is needed for other CDN providers. As part of the launch, IdeaNova has confirmed it is working with France24 to share news and up-to-date information with passengers around the world. The company is also working with Amagi Corporation, a leader in cloud-based FAST content syndication and technology for broadcast and connected TV (cTV).

“While traditional content delivery networks (CDNs) operate with a much larger hardware footprint, as they need to satisfy a large population of users, Inplay Edge is custom-built for aviation.”

“With France24 and Amagi, the content is free, which offers airlines an opportunity to further reduce the cost of IFE and – in the case of Amagi ad sponsored TV – to turn IFE from a cost center to a revenue generator,” IdeaNova’s CEO Juraj Siska commented.

“Inplay Edge operates under constrained network and hardware resource conditions. While traditional content delivery networks (CDNs) operate with a much larger hardware footprint, as they need to satisfy a large population of users, Inplay Edge is custom-built for aviation,” he continued.

With regards to its new InPlay DRM contract with SPI, IdeaNova confirmed it will soon be extended from the initial RAVE Wireless system to include all RAVE IFE systems. Inplay Cloud Services will be used to encode and encrypt content based on the specific requirements of each airline serviced by SPI.

“We selected IdeaNova’s Inplay DRM technology for two reasons,” said Ben Asmar, SPI’s VP Products and Strategy. “It is a proven technology that has been on the market for nearly two decades and it meets all of our IFE-specific requirements for SPI’s RAVE Product Lines.”
