It’s been a big show for Recaro Aircraft Seating at this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo. The airline seating manufacturer not only unveiled its lightweight BL3710 short-haul economy seat, but also announced six separate seat order announcements from airlines that include Cebu Pacific Air, Hainan Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Read more.

Phitek launched its first wireless in-flight entertainment product in hopes that airlines will focus on replacing in-flight magazines with digital versions that can be downloaded to passenger devices. The electronics supplier also showcased a solution for connectors that allows airlines to mix and match common cutout shapes to create the configuration that best suits their needs. Read more.

Panasonic Avionics continues to notch up sales of its advanced X Series of in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems with deals with Singapore Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines. Also, Panasonic Avionics’ Near-Field Communication reader, which is integrated into the Waterfront business-class seat, has become the first in the industry to be approved for in-seat production at Airbus and Boeing. Boeing’s Commercial Airplanes Product Development group is working hard to create lighting products that both increase passenger satisfaction and have a wow factor. Boeing’s 787 advanced the art of cabin design using light and color; a multitude of LED lighting schemes can be programmed in the Dreamliner, enhancing the overall interior design. Kontron, a specialist in the embedded aviation computer market, is addressing onboard cybersecurity concerns with its partner, Zebra Technologies Corporation. Zebra’s AirDefense Wireless Intrusion Protection System does for Kontron’s onboard Wi-Fi system what virus protection does for a home computer. “Add Air Defense,” says RJ McLaren, Kontron’s systems architect, “and all of a sudden, you’ve got the best-in-class Wi-Fi security in the world.”

Air France has selected Zodiac Inflight Innovations’ RAVE„¢ Centric IFE and Zodiac Seats France for the upcoming retrofit of its Airbus A330 fleet. The RAVE„¢ Centric IFE interface mirrors smartphone usability, featuring capacitive touch, high-resolution screens and app-based functionality. It also includes an integrated USB charger and can be paired with passengers’ personal electronic devices.

This week’s Aircraft Interiors Expo has been abuzz with satellite connectivity claims, as new systems and upgrades to existing technologies move from development to reality. Honeywell, along with GX Aviation partner Inmarsat, expects to declare its JetWave onboard terminal fully operational later this year, having already received FAA certification for installations on the Boeing 757 and Bombardier 5000 and 6000 corporate aircraft. Read more.
