United Airlines is accelerating its growth strategy with plans to add more than 250 aircraft by 2028, the most by any airline within a two-year period. The expansion introduces new aircraft types, upgraded cabins, and a broader range of premium experiences across every segment of the network. It reflects United’s push to strengthen its position as a leading premium airline, giving passengers more choice and a more consistent travel experience.
Expanding the Fleet with Premium-Focused Aircraft and Cabins
A central part of United’s announcement is a major fleet renewal and expansion plan that combines new aircraft with updated onboard products. United will add a mix of widebody and narrowbody planes, each designed for different routes and types of travelers.

One of the key additions is the new Airbus A321neo “Coastliner” subfleet. Built for transcontinental routes between Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York/Newark, it brings a widebody-style experience to a narrowbody aircraft. The Coastliner features lie-flat United Polaris seats with all-aisle access, marking the first time United has offered a full Polaris experience on domestic routes. Passengers on these aircraft will receive access to United Polaris lounges, extending a traditionally international premium benefit to domestic travelers.
In addition, the airline is introducing the Airbus A321XLR, which will replace older Boeing 757 aircraft on select international routes. With 32 premium seats, including lie-flat Polaris suites with privacy doors, the jet will provide United with more premium capacity while improving efficiency on routes to smaller cities in Europe and South America.

In the widebody segment, United is rolling out a new Boeing 787-9 configuration featuring its newly revealed Elevated interior. This includes the debut of United Polaris Studio suites, which are larger than standard Polaris seats and offer features such as privacy doors, companion ottomans, upgraded dining, and a 27-inch 4K OLED screen. The aircraft will have the most premium seats of any type in United’s fleet.
Furthermore, United Airlines has introduced the CRJ450 to its operations. Operated by SkyWest Airlines, it is essentially a reconfigured and rebranded CRJ200 designed to deliver a more premium regional experience.
Instead of the original 50-seat all-economy layout, the CRJ450 will have 41 seats, including seven United First seats and 34 in economy, with Economy Plus included. The aircraft also features a more open cabin, with a luggage closet replacing traditional overhead bins in first class. Economy passengers benefit from larger overhead bins and updated interiors, while connectivity remains consistent with free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members. United expects to have more than 50 of these aircraft in service by 2028.

Since launching its United Next strategy in 2021, the airline has already added hundreds of aircraft, including Boeing 737 MAX jets and Airbus A321neos, while retrofitting a significant portion of its existing fleet. The carrier’s premium seating capacity per North American departure has increased by 40 per cent, reflecting a clear shift toward higher-value offerings.
“For more than a decade, we’ve invested billions of dollars in our product, service, and technology as part of our plan to be the best brand loyal airline in the world, and the result is that more and more customers are choosing to fly us every day,” said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby. “Today we accelerate our plans and elevate our offerings to the next level, creating an even more consistent, premium onboard experience for every customer and delivering value across every cabin of service.”
Enhancing Passenger Experience Across Every Cabin
Beyond its fleet expansion, United is investing heavily in onboard products and amenities designed to improve the passenger experience at every level. The airline’s strategy focuses on delivering value across all cabins, from basic economy to long-haul premium travel.
Connectivity remains a central pillar of this effort. United is rolling out Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, offering free access to MileagePlus members and aiming to deliver an at-home internet experience in the air. The service is expected to be available on all dual-cabin aircraft by the end of 2027, supporting both work and entertainment throughout the journey.
Cabin upgrades extend to seating and in-flight entertainment (IFE). Within two years, United expects to install more than 227,000 seatback screens across over 1,200 aircraft, ensuring that every passenger has access to a high-quality entertainment experience. These screens support a growing content library that includes major studio films and streaming partnerships.

Economy passengers will also see improvements in comfort and amenities. The airline is introducing softer blankets, upgraded earbuds, and enhanced food and beverage offerings. A new partnership with Chef’s Table will bring menus designed by leading chefs, expanding dining options across cabins.
Onboard design enhancements further support the experience. Larger overhead bins are now installed on hundreds of aircraft, ensuring space for carry-on bags and reducing boarding stress. These improvements contribute to a smoother journey, particularly on high-demand routes.
United’s digital ecosystem also plays a key role. The airline’s app continues to evolve with features such as real-time gate updates, baggage tracking with Apple AirTag integration, and step-by-step navigation for connecting passengers. These tools help streamline the travel experience from airport to arrival.
