United Airlines (United) has introduced a new economy-class seating concept aimed at making long-haul flights more comfortable. Called the United Relax Row, it lets passengers turn a row of three seats into a couch-like, lie-flat space after takeoff. Launching in 2027, it will be rolled out across more than 200 widebody aircraft, giving travelers a way to get extra space without moving up to a premium cabin.

Redefining Economy Comfort with Convertible Seating

The new design features a row of three economy-class seats that can turn into a flat, bed-like surface. By raising adjustable leg rests to a 90-degree angle, passengers can create a continuous surface space suitable for resting, stretching, or sleeping during long-haul flights.

The concept targets a wide range of travelers. Families with young children can use the space to create a more relaxed environment; couples can share the area for added comfort; and solo travelers can benefit from the additional room typically associated with higher cabin classes. Positioned between United Economy and United Premium Plus, the product introduces a new tier within the economy experience.

The idea is not entirely new in the industry. Air New Zealand introduced a similar concept with its Skycouch, which entered service in 2011 and allows passengers to convert a row of economy seats into a lie-flat space. United’s Relax Row signals growing interest among airlines in rethinking how economy seating can deliver more comfort.

Passengers booking the Relax Row will receive a set of upgraded soft amenities designed to enhance inflight comfort. These include a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized blanket, extra pillows, and a plush toy along with a children’s travel kit for families. Together, these features help create a more personalized experience during the flight.

“As a leading premium airline, we’re committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers, and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that. Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them,” said United Airlines EVP and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella. “United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row and is one of the many reasons why we’re continuing to win brand loyal customers.”

The rollout will begin in 2027, with plans to install the seats on more than 200 Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft by 2030. Each aircraft will feature up to 12 Relax Row sections.

Expanding Family-Friendly and Flexible Travel Options

The Relax Row is part of United’s broader effort to make travel easier and more comfortable for families. In recent times, the airline has introduced several features aimed at reducing stress and improving the experience for passengers traveling with children.

One of the key features is United’s family seating policy, which ensures that children under 12 can sit next to an adult at no extra cost. The airline uses a dynamic seating system to automatically adjust seats when needed, so families can stay together without having to sort it out themselves.

The carrier has also enhanced its onboard offering for younger travelers. Children’s meal options are available on select flights and can be pre-ordered, providing familiar and accessible choices; and in-flight entertainment (IFE) includes a wide range of family-friendly shows and movies available on both personal devices and seatback screens.

The airline also offers a Children’s Travel Kit, developed in collaboration with Sesame Street, which includes activities and sensory elements designed to keep children engaged and comfortable during the flight.

Within this broader strategy, the Relax Row represents a natural next step. By providing additional space within the economy cabin, the product addresses a common passenger need while maintaining the value proposition of economy travel.
