Aircraft manufacturers around the world gathered in northeast Hampshire, England last week for the 49th edition of the Farnborough International Airshow. From supersonic fighter jets to unmanned aerial systems, participants were treated to the latest industry innovations first-hand.

The commercial aircraft industry members in attendance had much to be excited about as high-level competition has driven sector innovation to new levels, notably within the wide-body jet category. Day 1 of the airshow brought the launch of the much-anticipated Airbus A350 XWB jetliner. The aircraft seats 250-400 passengers, but more importantly boasts a fuel efficiency that operates at a 25 percent reduction in operation costs per seat in comparison to its rivals. This is good news all around considering fuel efficiency reduces costs not only for airlines, but for passengers as well. Not to mention the contribution to a reduced carbon footprint and enhanced image of the industry overall.

The A350 XWB will have its runway debut later this year, with customers including Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Ethiad Airways. With aircraft manufacturers in high competition for market share and fuel-efficient technology, we can’t help but have even higher hopes for the future of air travel.
